Description
North America, Pliocene to Pleistocene, Ice Age, ca. 100,000 to 20,000 years old. A partial jawbone and molars from a mastodon (Mammut americanum). The name 'mastodon' comes from its high crown teeth, described as "nipple teeth" by French naturalist Georges Cuvier in 1817, and these teeth were suited to mashing leaves and twigs rather than grasses - mastodons lived in forested areas, unlike mammoths which were suited to open grasslands / tundra. Size: 12.75" L x 4" W x 7" H (32.4 cm x 10.2 cm x 17.8 cm)
