Religious manuscript, neat and well formed letters in black ink, lines separated by gold clouds, the text is surrounded by a frame with neat floral design in red, green, purple, blue, orange, gold and black. Written on the two sides of the sheet.
This beautifully scribed and exquisitely decorated example of the Dewan is of Kashmiri origin and dates from circa 1820 when Kashmiri scribes and decorators were producing work which many say has never been excelled even at the height of the Safavid period. The author, Mohammed Shama od-din Hafez, lived from 1325-1399. His name â€˜Hafezâ€™ was given to those Muslims who could recite the Holy Koran by heart. He was a Sufi Muslim who practiced a mystical form of Islam. He was one of Persiaâ€™s finest lyric poets and wrote in the sophisticated â€˜Ghazalâ€™ manner. In the Dewan this takes the poetic form of 6 to 15 couplets, and expresses Sufi ideals in lyrics. A truly outstanding example of Islamic work at its very best and in fine condition.
