Heading:
Author: Hall, Francis, Lieut.
Title: Travels in Canada, and the United States, in 1816 and 1817
Place Published: London
Publisher:Longman, Hurst, et al
Date Published: 1818
Description: [4] ads., [4], 543 pp. Folding map as frontispiece. (8vo) 22.7x14 cm (9x5½"), later plain with printed spine label imitating a publisher's temporary binding, edges untrimmed. First Edition.Howes characterizes this book as an unflattering picture of American life and character, but in fact Hall, a British army officer, did admire much that he saw, and his descriptions are, for the period, quite unbiased. Hall landed in New York and went overland to Quebec, then on to Montreal, Kingston, Niagara, etc., before heading south through Philadelphia and Washington to the Carolinas. He stayed at Monticello with Jefferson, with whom he was impressed; his report of their interview is interesting. An appendix contains essays on slavery, the American character, and the government; the first of these contains an account of the unjust trial and execution of a Black ship cook in Charleston during his visit. Howes H62; Sabin 29769.
