Item Details
Description
West / North Africa, Hausa People, Islamic culture, ca. 19th century CE. A large riding stirrup with two elongated flaps that point downward, the central foot plate is pierced with petaloid openwork rosette. The top foot plate is surmounted by an arch band and hexagonal loop for the saddle strap. The surface underside the flaps and along the sides are etched with scrolling trellis and linear motifs. Size: 8.25" L x 4.5" W x 11" H (21 cm x 11.4 cm x 27.9 cm)

Provenance: private Denver, Colorado, USA collection, acquired in the 1960s

Condition
Singular stirrup. Rubbing and softening to etched motifs. Indentations and surface wear commensurate with age and use, otherwise intact. Heavy patina and dark toning throughout. Remains of frayed cord attached to suspension loop as shown.
