Description
A European school oil on canvas of a black hunting dog with a silver collar, standing in a landscape with game at its feet. Above the dog's rear is a cartouche that reads "Espion. 1698". Affixed to the stretcher is an old catalog tag that reads "Gen. Katal. No. 7204," which may be indicative of previous Germanic provenance. Measures 39" x 50 1/2".
Condition
Poor condition. There is a large V-shape tear to the upper right of the canvas (7" down and 5" across), not patched and with resulting loss to the paint layer. 6" linear tear to the bottom left corner, and 3/4" cut in the center of the dog's body. There are several dimples to the canvas. Scratch across the dog's fore legs. Craquelure across the surface. A few old patches, one to the area of the dog's chest, with accompanying over-painting in that area. Stretcher creasing. A little bit of paint flaking to the hind legs. Overall darkening.
