US Marine Corps Officer's Pattern 1859 False Embroidered Brass Horn with M Bullion Cap Emblem
False embroidered brass hunting horn, nominally 2.17" x 1.28" surrounding a silver plated Gothic "M" that is nominally .64" x .5", all mounted on a dark red velvet background with a twisted bullion boarder and a black fabric backing. Overall size of device is nominally 2.85" x 2.06". Campbell & O'Donnell show a drawing of this insignia and describe it on page as Figure 701 in American Military Headgear Insignia and note that Marine officers utilized this insignia from circa 1859-1875.
Condition
Very good. Velvet with areas of darkening and showing some dirt and discoloration. Bugle with a rich, dark patina and no gilt present. "M" with traces of tarnished silver. Bullion boarder with a areas of looseness near the bottom center.
