Description
Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971) was a theologian, ethicist, commentator on politics and public affairs, professor at Union Theological Seminary for 30+years and a 1964 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 1943, Niebuhr preached a sermon at Union Church in Heath, Massachusetts on 'Practical Christianity'. In his sermon, Niebuhr included a prayer he wrote as a 'tag line'-- 'God, give us grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed, Courage to change the things that should be changed, and the wisdom to distinguish the one from the other'. Shortly afterwards, Niebuhr's prayer was adopted by the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous; a simplified version of Niebuhr's original prayer was absorbed into the A.A. program of recovery and service. keywords; theology, ethics, serenity prayer
