One of the subjects of the Whitney Museum of New York's 2023 exhibition 'Edward Hopper's New York,' was the artist's fascination with windows in a densely crowded metropolis like New York. For the artist, the window became a symbol of the porous nature of interior and exterior spaces. The stillness of the interior space in East Side Interior suggests a vulnerability and privacy of the subject as she gazes into the open space outside her window.
