Description
Japanese panel, Meiji period, 19th century.
Hand-embroidered silk.
Shows signs of wear.
Size: 130 x 50 cm; 135 x 54.5 cm (frame).
The present Japanese silk is heir to the paintings of Kano Sansetsu (1589-1651), a Japanese painter who represented the Kyo Kano (Kyoto Kano) school from the late Momoyama to the early Edo period. His works, full of unique stimuli, pioneered the later appearances of Ito Jakucho and Soga Shohaku, and continue to influence many artists today. The tender composition is notable for its detailed and naturalistic character. It depicts a crane in a natural setting.
