Description
Philippines Igorot " Hapag " Statue small in size from the 1st quarter of 20th century or earlier. Finely carved from a single piece of wood with the deity in the seated position with arms crossed, inset beaded eyes, and covered all over with ritual applied patina. Hapag or Hipag refers to the war deities invoked during ceremonies associated with violence, aggression, headhunting, sorcery, and even disease or afflictions. These deities are represented in various forms, including humans, cocks, and wild boards, or ducks. The figures serve as a means to call upon specific Hapag or Hipag deities for assistance and are considered to hold great power. During rituals and ceremonies, these figures are ritually smeared with the blood of sacrificed animals to invoke their presence and power. Some of these figures are stored in baskets or wooden ceremonial boxes along with other objects used in such rituals. Human form Hapag or Hipag are essentially miniature versions of granary figures known as Bulul, which are commonly associated with the Ifugao tribe in the Northern Luzon region of the Philippines. Size 6 3/4" H (Approx. weight 4.9 oz)
