Description
South East Asia, Philippines, Mindanao, probably Maranao or Tausug circa late 1800s. Finely made Morro machete or short sword known as a Barong or Barung, a traditional and deadly leaf shaped blade weapon from the regions of Muslim influence like Maranao and Tausug. Barong saw wide spread use for their ease of handling and cutting power, known to be effective for farming and battle with the ability to disembowel entire limbs in one swing, the blade is single edged with a strong spine. The handle is an ornate zoomorphic bird head carved in light brown or cream colored wood with finely engraved bands of brass, copper and twine. Size overall 23 1/2" L, blade 17" L.
