Description
Single Draw Brass, unmarked, with braided horsehair wrap, having sliding lens covers at both ends, 1" objective, stored in blue painted tin lidded tube with friction cap, painted with owner's name and "USN" in gold amid surrounding scrollwork. Long glass is 19" to 29" long, with fine optics. 27 1/2" x 3" tube. Stiff slide.Possibly owed by Master Carpenter Joseph B. Fletcher of the USS "Vandalia", an armed sloop that served as the Flagship of the Pacific Station in 1888. Sunk by hurricane off Aoia, Samoa March 15, 1889. Fletcher continued service through the war to 1900.
