New York: Snowden and Prall, 1847. 8vo. 94 pp., + 2 folding tables. Original marbled boards sympathetically rebacked in morocco. ************* First edition. One of the first books printed in the Mpongwe dialect of the Myene language, spoken by a small group of Bantus living in Gabon. The present possibly represents the earliest published grammar of any dialect of this African language. In addition to the grammar and vocabularies, the work also contains a translation of the parable of the prodigal son into Mpongwe with a literal English translation.

Old blind-stamp of the Bowdoin College Library to title and two other leaves, a few leaves with wrinkled or lightly chipped edges, some light foxing or similar minor blemishes, overall Good.
