Description
20th c. American Collaborative etching
Portraits of Adolph Gottlieb, Esther D. Gottlieb, Edgar Levy, Lucille C. Levy, David Smith and Dorothy Dehner.
etching, 1933, signed or initialed by Dehner, Edgar Levy and Esther D. Gottlieb and numbered 37/100 in pencil, printed by Michael Kirk, New York, in 1974.  6 x 8"
The current work was created one evening in 1933 when 6 artists gathered at the Brooklyn Heights apartment of Edgar and Lucille Levy. Each of the artists portrayed attended the gathering at the Levy's apartment at 66 Montague Street. Who was to portray whom was determined by drawing lots, thus on a single plate there is a portrait of Dorothy Dehner by Adolph Gottlieb and a portrait of Esther Gottlieb by David Smith and so on. Gottlieb made a proof from the plate in 1933 and then it remained in his studio until it was discovered and the current edition of 100 was pulled in the 1970s.
