Item Details
Description
This is a 4-4-0 model. It runs on alcohol which is placed in the black tank in the tender. It is marked for ETAT, however, this locomotive appears to be British and appears to be a School Class locomotive. It may be a unit built by apprentices in a locomotive shop of the British Southern Railway line. A set of wheels, truck frames for one car plus a thousand feet of rail are included. A car is needed to carry the operator who will need to reach over the tender to access the controls located in the cab. A drawbar is not included and need to be built. This unit has European couplers, The alcohol torch is located in the cab. It appears that air is compressed in the fuel tank using a bicycle tier pump. In the last two photos: the throttle is the large red lever and the reverse gear is the small one, the pressure gauge. Please contact info@julietandfriends.com for more information. Overall very good condition. Please refer to the photos for more details. In person examination of this lot can be arranged. The unit is very heavy, can be lifted by two pairs of strong arms. In house shipping is not available for this lot. A bid winning buyer can come to collect this locomotive in person or arrange own third party shipping service. Please refer to julietandfriends.com for alternative shipping recommendations.

Length: 152.5 cm or 5'; Width: 25.5 cm or 10"; Height: 48.3 cm or 19"

Provenance: This locomotive is from the prestigious, life-long toy and model train collection of Mr. John F. McHugh, a well-established lawyer specializing in organizing short-line and regional railway companies' documentation in the late 20th century. Mr. McHugh acquired this locomotive from a widow in Los Angeles, whose late husband bought this unit with the intention to run it around their property (never happened, this unit sat in their house for many years), and whose sister is a long-time business associate of Mr. McHugh, both working on railroad issues. Over a quarter century, Mr. McHugh had been building and operating a Lionel standard gauge train display as a part of the Bergen County Model Railroad Club's President's day Pearl River NY Train Show in the United Methodist Church, where Mr. McHugh's train was one of the five on display in the show. There is a French Express Engine Nord 2.122, identified as a de Glehn compound loco built in 1891 for the Nord and sold to the Nord-Belge in 1903, rebuilt as 4-4-0 in 1892, which is depicted on the internet and appears identical to this unit in auction. The last time it was in operation was in Godshall's Shop, Shermans Dale, PA 17090, which is a live steam repair and construct shop, where it was ran on compressed air to tune the steam engine and safety valves. Then this unit was on display in Mr. McHugh's law office in the Woolworth Building in New York City.
