Description
Pencil and ballpoint pen on grey paper, signed 'R Ray Hamilton' and inscribed 'USA' along the left edge.
14 1/4 x 17 1/4 in. (sheet), unframed.
Note: South Carolina-born Ray Hamilton was a self-taught artist with no formal training. In a recent review of his work, The New Yorker wrote that his ballpoint pen drawings "quiver with presence." Hamilton filled in the outlines of his figures with a tight network of red, green and blue ink, sometimes pressing so hard on the paper that it would warp and split. In the vein of Outsider Art, Hamilton's subjects are simple, relying on observed forms that are self-referential, invoking memories from childhood and past experiences.
