Description
Lot of 12, late 20 th century; each a hand carved sandstone, limestone or pottery example of one of the well documented Adena tablets, hand carved to scale with both faces and in the case of one the sides or edges. These include the following in sandstone: Wilmington, which has all four edges carved with a different pattern, 4 ¾ x 3 ¾”; plus Kiefer, 4 ¼ x 2 ½”; plus Larkin A, 4 x 3”; Low, 4 ¾ x 3 ¼”; plus Waverly, 4 x 3”; Moundville Turtle, 4 ½ x 3 ¼”; Grave Creek, 4 3/8 x 2 ½”; plus Cincinnati, 4 ¼ x 2 ½”; plus Allen, 3 ¾ x 1 7/8”; plus Montgomery, 3 x 2 3/4”; plus Larkin B in carved limestone3 ½ x 3”; and grit tempered pottery example Gaitskill, 4 ¼ x 2 ¾”. Most of the reverse of these tablets have grooves from use to grind minerals such as red, blue or yellow ochre, gallena, or other colorful minerals used as pigments to use the tablets as printing blocks for either the human body or fabric or both, these are copied as on the originals.
