Description
Papua New Guinea, Middle Sepik River region, Iatmul people, ca. 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden head, perhaps intended as a surrogate trophy head, with a lengthy wooden handle. The eyes are inlaid with cowrie snail shells while the face is painted with elaborate geometric and curvilinear motifs in yellow, white, and red pigment. Size: 4.2" W x 11.875" H (10.7 cm x 30.2 cm); 12.25" H (31.1 cm) on included custom stand.
