Description
This is an antique Japanese GO gameboard and pieces dating to the 19th century. The heavy floor gameboard (Goban) is incised with 324 squares (18 x 18). Accompanied with two covered wooden boxes filled with slate and shell game stones. The game of Go is considered one of the oldest in the world, having originated in China as long as 2,500 years ago. This game of strategy is played all over the world with this type of floor game board made in Japan.
The game board is 9 1/2" tall x 18 x 16". The squares are each 7/8" x 7/8". The stone holders are each 3 3/4 x 5". The stones vary somewhat in size and thickness due to the fact that they were hand polished.

Condition
The board exhibits wear, scratches, abrasions, dings, small losses, and checks. The game squares are very worn with smoothing to the surface from well-loved use. The stones exhibit some small losses and wear. Minor checks to the boxes. Please examine the images for the best indication of condition.
