Description
1840 JOHN DONNE 1ed Book of Devotions Bible Sermons Biography IZAAK WALTON

“Devotions by John Donne DD, Dean of St Pauls. With Two Sermons. I. On the Decease of Lady Danvers Mother of George Herbert. II. Deaths Duel—His Own Funeral Sermon. To Which is Prefixed His Life by Izaak Walton" is a comprehensive collection of the prominent English poet and cleric’s works. The book initiates with the “Life of John Donne,” a biography written by Izaak Walton. This biographical sketch is enriched with Walton’s personal experiences and insights into Donne’s life, illuminating his character and contributions.

This 19th-century printing, published in London by William Pickering, has been enhanced with additional materials to heighten its appeal. These include two letters from Donne, one to the Duke of Buckingham and the other to Sir Robert Carr, which provide further context to his “Book of Devotions”. Two sermons are also included. The first is a tribute to Lady Danvers, mother of his friend George Herbert, and the second, “Death’s Duel,” is Donne’s own funeral sermon, which was given the title by King James.

The first appearance of the “Book of Devotions” was in 1624 and had seen five editions by 1638. This edition reintroduces the revered work, providing an engraved frontispiece depicting Donne, taken from his monument in old St. Paul’s Cathedral. The monument, representing Donne in his death shroud, was created by Nicholas Stone and still partially survives in the Crypt of the present Cathedral. This edition aimed to honor Donne’s legacy, shedding light on his religious devotion and literary prowess.
