Zanne Hochberg (American, 1931-2001). Portrait of a Woman, acrylic on canvas, ca. 1968. Signed at lower right. A dreamy portrait of a woman by postwar abstract expressionist Zanne Hochberg. The composition features the visage of a beautiful woman with an elegant brunette updo and delicate features, all delineated in Hochberg's signature abstract style blending spontaneous gestural brushstrokes with lyrical washes of color. Rick Bretell, Director of the Dallas Museum of Art, drew parallels between Hochberg's work and that of Joan Mitchell, Helen Frankenthaler, and Lee Krasner in a 2016 review. These comparisons are not surprising given the immediacy of Hochberg's gestural manner and her colorful soak and stain passages. This said, Hochberg's style is distinctly her own. What's more, she was among a generation of artists that expanded Abstract Expressionism beyond New York. Artist Biographical Statement: "Zanne Hochberg was born Zanne Lee Rosenthal on July 11, 1931 in Rochester, New York. As a child, she studies art at the Rochester Memorial Gallery, piano at the Eastman School, and took ballet lessons with a former ballerina from the Metropolitan Ballet Company. Her deepest love was for the visual arts which she pursued vigorously throughout her life. Zanne Hochberg earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in painting from the University of Florida in Gainsville in 1953. After spending several years working in interior design and art related businesses in New York and Denver she moved to Dallas in 1958 and continued h er painting career. In 1974, Zanne Hochberg received a Master of Fine Arts from Southern Methodist University. She resided in Dallas as a workign artist until her death in 2001." Hochberg's work has been collected by the Dallas Museum of Art, the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas, and the Austin Museum of Art among others. Her long career was recognized with a solo retrospective exhibition at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts titled "Zanne Hochberg: The Art of Our Time" in 2011.

Signed at lower right. Overall very good save spots on the canvas (most visible on upper right and verso) resulting from a natural process that occurs when there is iron oxide in pigments. Mounted in custom frame; frame has slight scuffs and remnants of gallery paper at the peripheries, but the framing is otherwise very nice and fit with a suspension wire.
