Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Chimu and Inca cultures, ca. 1100 to 1500 CE. Interesting study lot of three classic vessels from Peru. First and earliest is a blackware pottery vessel with large raised nubbins and two small suspension lugs. Neck is a Chancay/Inca stirrup vessel in the form of a Pakay seed pod. Sitting on flared base with tall spout sitting upon a large curved bean pod. Finally, the single most classic form of pottery in the Inca empire - the aryballos. Pointed base with twin handles where a tump line could support it using one's forehead. Flared spout with small animal head on shoulder, also part of the suspension process with the tump line. This would prevent the tump line from sliding upward. Painted in red with white vertical stripes. Size of aryballos: 6.625" H (16.8 cm)

Provenance: private Carroll collection, Georgia, USA, by descent; ex-private Jim Carroll collection, Maryland, USA, acquired 1960s
