"This book is a treasure. A must for every civil war nerd. The battlefield maps captured my imagination as a kid and they still do now."
"I remember first reading this book in the 80's and it captured my attention as a child. Ever since reading it I have been a Civil War "fan"(don't know if that's the right word or not). The book goes into GREAT detail about the war(630 pages!). The various battles are covered in great depth. The battle maps with illustrated troops are like nothing I have ever seen before or since. The historic photos are plentiful and very good. There are also photos of then and now comparisons. There's a reason why the author won a Pulitzer and you will see why when reading this book."
"This is the book that turned me into a Civil War investigator. The art work for the battles alone are worth the purchase. This book might be old but it is very inspiring to people even to this very day if you can drag them away from electronic devices."
Charles Bruce Catton (1899-1978) was an American historian and journalist, best known for his books on the American Civil War. Known as a narrative historian, Catton specialized in popular history, featuring colorful characters and historical vignettes, in addition to the basic facts, dates, and analyses. Although his books were well researched and supported by footnotes, they were not generally presented in a rigorous academic style. He won a Pulitzer Prize in 1954 for A Stillness at Appomattox, his study of the final campaign of the war in Virginia.
