Description
1651 Manuscript Document ordering payment of 20 pounds due to John Watson (Bluemantle) dating back to 1643. This document was written after the assassination of King Charles I (1649), and before the establishment of Cromwell's Protectorate (1653). It was signed by two of the members of Parliament who signed the death warrent of Chas. I who became know as The Regicides (Killers of a King). It was also signed by two other members of Parliament who sat for the trial, but did not sign the warrant. It was signed by one supporter of Oliver Cromwell. All of their stories are quite interesting. Their names are Lord Thomas Grey, Humphrey Edwards, Nicholas Love, Henry Mildmay, and Denis Bond. There is another signature under theirs that we could not decipher, and it is signed by John Watson (an important figure himself) on page 2 where his payment is docketed. A remarkable piece of English history during a very tumultuous time. It is written on a single sheet of laid paper (watermarked), folded once to a size of H 11-1/2" x W 7-1/2". Normal soiling and light chipping to edges. One small archival (?) tape repair at the middle of the center fold, and the right margin of the second page has been similarly reinforced. Condition: Excellent Condition. A previous owner has noted "Regicide" or "Reg" and "H Edwards" next to the signatures, which could be easily erased. Link for high-res photos:
