Description
African Ashanti Hand Carved Wooden Stool from Ghana. Size: 15.25 inches high x 16 inches diameter. Features two figurals and central animal. In Ashanti culture, stools have a spiritual significance as well as a purely practical use. The stool was understood to be the seat of its owner’s soul. When not in use, it was therefore placed at a slant against a wall so that none of the souls passing by could settle on it. This stool was carved out of a single piece of wood. If an king, or “Oba”, died a natural death during his own reign, one of his stools was blackened. It would then be regarded as an ancestral seat and sacrifices would be made to it.
