Francis Scott Key Signed Letter as U.S. Attorney
Francis Scott Key (1779-1843). Autograph Letter Signed, "FS Key", dated February 3, 1841, from Washington, DC when Key served as U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. Single page letter on bifolium stationery measures 7.625" x 10". Holes at intersecting folds and small closed tears at fold lines. Toning to the integral address panel, which was sealed with wax. In very good condition.
Best known for authoring "The Star-Spangled Banner", Key writes here regarding money he owed to another individual. After itemizing the outstanding balance, Key expresses his disappointment that he hasn't been able to pay it off entirely: "Now as to the payment - I had hoped to have settled it long since, but have been so disappointed in collections that it has not been in my power. I think, a little after the close of Congress, if I can even get only one or two of several claims in which I am interested, passed, I shall be able to discharge it."
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
