Confederate Endorsed Document by John H. Forney & John B. Magruder

An endorsed Confederate document by major generals John H. Forney and John B. Magruder. 1p, measuring 3.25" x 7.75", Hempstead, Texas, dated April 29, 1865 and May 2, 1865. The document is from Brigadier General W.H. King asking for information as to when commutation of rations "may be properly claimed". It was received and forwarded by Forney, endorsed as "John H. Forney" on April 29th, and later endorsed by Magruder as "JB Magruder" on May 2nd. With an additional endorsement on verso. Light foxing throughout. Slightly rough edges. Some smudging to Forney's signature and minor feathering to Magruder's signature. Both boldly signed.

John Horace Forney (1829-1902) was promoted to the rank of major general in October of 1862. He was given command of a division of Pemberton's Army of the Mississippi at the Battle of Vicksburg but was captured by the enemy when the city fell into Union hands in July 1863. Forney was later exchanged on October 13, 1863, and served as a division commander for the rest of the war.

John Bankhead Magruder (1807-1871) had previously served in the Union Army but left when he received a commission in the Confederate Army. Magruder was given command of the Army of the Peninsula and successfully delayed the advance of McClellan and the Army of the Potomac during the 1862 Peninsula Campaign. However, his reputation took a hit during the Seven Days Battles and he spent the remainder of the war in a more administrative role.
