Description

Jefferson & Madison Signed Land Grant With Native American Association "in consideration of military service"

A land grant awarded to a military veteran signed by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. 1p partially printed of vellum, measuring 12.5" x 15.25", Washington, D.C., dated January 17, 1803. Signed "Th: Jefferson" as President and countersigned "James Madison" as Secretary of State. The grant has a large paper seal adhered at the lower left. Matted and framed to the overall size of 19.25" x 22.25". Flattened folds, with uneven toning and light soiling throughout. Creasing at the corners and to the paper seal. Darker toning and soiling at the document edges. Both signatures are clear and attractive.

The document, No. 2835, states: "in consideration of military service performed by John Gibson Junr., an Ensign for three years…there is granted by the said United States unto Duncan McArthur assignee of the said John Gibson Junr. a certain tract of land, containing seven hundred acres situate between the Little Miami and Sciota Rivers, north-west of the River Ohio…"

Duncan McArthur (1772-1839) was a military officer, Federalist, and politician from Ohio who served as the 11th governor of Ohio. McArthur grew up in western Pennsylvania but later moved to Kentucky, where he was employed as an Indian ranger. In 1790, he volunteered at Fort Pitt for expeditions against Native Americans during the Northwest Indian War. McArthur moved across the Ohio River in 1797 to Chillicothe, where he gained wealth by his land speculations in the Northwest Territory. By 1804 he was considered the wealthiest land holder in the Scioto Valley. From 1823-1825 McArthur would serve as a Representative for Ohio's 6th District, and in 1830 he became Governor of Ohio for one term.
