Item Details
Description
Carl Thomas Hoppe (Texas, 1897-1981), landscape of bluebonnets and oak trees, 1966, oil on board

sight: 16 x 20 in., frame: 24.5 x 28.5 in.

Provenance: A Bee Cave, Texas collection

Early Texas artist Carl Hoppe is best known for painting Texas landscapes and urbanscapes in an impressionistic style. Hoppe was as a salesman for Joske's Department Store in downtown San Antonio, painting as hobby. Nevertheless, Hoppe was able to study under a very impressive group of notable Texas artists who worked in the San Antonio, Texas area, including Porfirio Salinas, Robert Wood, Jose Arpa, and Julian Onderdonk, picking up stylistic cues that are visible in his original works. In 1997 a special exhibit of his works was held at the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum in Canyon, Texas.
