East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A ritualistic Sancai pottery altar table of rectangular form supported by four legs and a decorative apron under the overhang displays molded curvilinear motifs in ochre yellow. The flat tabletop is surrounded by a stepped rim and tall backsplash, all glazed with green and ochre hues. The underside has a dedication or label in Chinese characters. Such tables may have been laden with miniature pottery offerings of scrumptious food and drink to offer to the ancestors or gods. Size: 12.25" L x 8" W x 9.75" H (31.1 cm x 20.3 cm x 24.8 cm)
Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000

Repaired, back legs reattached and backsplash. Surface abrasions and chips. Mineral and earthen encrustations throughout and great remains of glaze.
