Description
Two Sumatran Short Jackets from the 19th or early 20th Century. Each jacket measures 10'' x 54'' (25 x 137 cm). These jackets were traditionally worn by young women in the Kauer district of the western highlands of South Sumatra during ceremonial occasions. They feature a distinctive cropped style with long sleeves and are exquisitely adorned over their striped fabric base. The jackets are crafted from cotton fabric and embellished with silk embroidery, adding intricate patterns and designs to the garment. At the front, fragments of mica are incorporated for added texture and visual appeal. Additionally, sculpted cowrie shells adorn the neck area, contributing to the overall ornamentation of the jacket. A supplementary weft back panel completes the ensemble, showcasing the attention to detail and craftsmanship of these traditional garments.
