Exquisite Indonesian Tais Fetu Ceremonial Sarong, Timor, 19th Century. Crafted from cotton and silk. Dimensions: 4'4'' x 2'9'' (132 x 84 cm). This remarkable piece of art would have originally taken a tubular form, with its edges expertly joined, intended to be worn either as a skirt or a dress. Its deep red base is adorned with a lavish array of polychromatic diamond shapes and various other captivating geometric patterns.Tais fetu, like this one, were exclusively reserved for women belonging to the families of local rulers and esteemed warriors. The decorative technique employed here, known as supplementary weft wrapping (buna), is a highly revered art form that often closely resembles intricate embroidery. Although Timor had a substantial trade relationship with China, the usage of silk was relatively rare in the region. However, it proves to be the ideal material for this particular method, showcasing the fusion of craftsmanship and artistic expression unique to Timorese culture.
