Chinese Canton Shawl, 19th C. Silk on silk. Size: 7'6'' x 7'6'' (229 x 229 cm). Made for the European market. Small embroidered flowers, birds and butterflies dot the central field, with a large bird in each corner and a border of scrolling flowers and leaves. Edges finished with silk macrame and fringe. Chinese export shawls in black and white were produced in large quantity, but yellow ones like this are rare and this particular yellow can be dated to the first half of the nineteen century.
