Description
**Originally Listed At $750**
Near East, Byzantine period, ca. 10th to 12th century CE. Two splendid and quite sizable fragments of a bronze crucifix adorned with incised decoration of Saint Basil of Caesarea standing at the base. The bearded saint wears a lengthy, cross-adorned shroud with "Basil the Great" inscribed in unical Greek script on either side. Basil was known for his work as a theologian as well as caring for the impoverished and underprivileged. As he is additionally remembered as a father of communal monasticism, this cross may have been venerated at a monastery. A dotted border lines the periphery of each fragment, while additional Greek letters - "HO" - embellish the right arm of the cross covering, perhaps forming part of a Christogram. Size of largest fragment: 3" W x 6" H (7.6 cm x 15.2 cm); 16" H (40.6 cm) on included custom stand.
