Item Details
Description
Reclining Figure, ed. 10, linocut on paper, 9 1/4 x 11 3/4, , Collecting the Fort Worth Circle - THE BOBBIE WYGANT COLLECTION. LOTS: 299 – 307. Longtime local television legend Bobbie Wygant spent more than seventy years working at Channel 5, starting with the momentous day the station went on the air in 1948. Along the way, she won countless awards, including an Emmy. Few people know that she and her husband Phil were art lovers who started collecting art while they were still living paycheck to paycheck, according to Ms. Wygant. One of their earliest and most important art guides was Reilly Nail who worked at Channel 5 briefly in the early 1950s before he moved to New York. Phil Wygant was the head of production at the station when Reilly showed up there with a head full of creative ideas. Together, they worked on the crew that designed and built sets for the TV studio, among many other tasks. The Wygants bought a small plot of land on Eagle Mountain Lake where they lived part time. Reilly visited often to paint the landscape. The painting titled Drift Wood was painted by Reilly at their Eagle Mountain retreat. After Reilly moved to New York to begin his celebrated career in television and advertising, he introduced the Wygants to his friends there, including a woman who worked at the Valentine Gallery. With Reilly's encouragement, they bought from her a Calder painting which is still in the Wygant collection today. While the Wygants weren't officially part of the Fort Worth Circle, they socialized with many of the artists and purchased works from them, including David Brownlow, Dickson Reeder and Bror Utter. Painter Jacques Burdick who hailed from Fort Worth's Northside became a close friend who they met when he was teaching French part-time to supplement his income.
