Description
Painted American Folk Art Pedestal, signed J.F. Schrecengost
20th century, hand-painted pine, octagonal top and foot with square column, inscribed "July 14, 1941" to top, the top underside signed "J.F. Schrecengost," the whole decorated with silver and gilt painted religious bible verses alternating with primitive figural and landscape scenes, the column mounted with cut wood moon, star, heart, and cross, the foot underside with pen and ink utopian landscape.
22 x 11 1/4 x 11 1/4 in.
The collector shares the following story about this pedestal (lot 98) and table (lot 99):
"This small table and pedestal were purchased together about thirty years ago from an antique shop in Western Pennsylvania. We were just getting interested in folk art and we were stunned by the writing, imagery and symbols on all sides of both pieces. Even underneath the tops! Both are signed and dated by the maker. The large body of water and ship pictured on the small table and anchor placed under the top suggest a nautical connection to the maker. These pieces expressed powerful imagery to us when we purchased them so many years ago and still have the same effect now."
