Description
"
Late Hellenistic or Roman, probably Egypt 1st cent. B.C.-2nd cent. A.D. Bronze. L. 2 31/64 in; 6.3 cm
Recumbent sphinx with outstretched forelegs and flexed hind legs, her head turned to her left. Her hair forms a wreath around the smooth crown of her head that is pierced by a vertical drill-hole. Powerful, plastically rendered body with pointed breasts between the forelegs. The tail follows the contour of the right thigh. The sphinx has no wings, which is typical of Egyptian depictions of this mythical beast. Probably an applique from a vessel.
Half of right forepaw preserved; half of left forepaw restored.
