Description
Green-Winged Teal Drake
Harry Vinuckson Shourds II (1930-2017)
Seaville, NJ., 1980
9 1/2 in. long
Harry Vinuckson Shourds II was born in Ocean City, NJ, in July 1930. He was a third-generation decoy carver, following his father, Harry Mitchell Shourds, and grandfather, Harry Vinuckson Shourds, for whom he was named. Anyone who is involved in decoy collecting is aware of the Shourds name. His grandfather was known as the greatest professional decoy maker in New Jersey at a time when Tuckerton was considered the handmade decoy capital of the U.S. His father died when Harry was only 12 years of age. Like his grandfather and father, HV Shourds II carved in the Barnegat Bay decoy style. Though his work was similar to that of his father and grandfather, HV Shourds II added his own touches, making it possible
to differentiate his from those of his father and grandfather.
Before his death in July of 2017, HV Shourds II resided in Seaville, NJ. Many have visited his decoy shop and home, known as “The Duck Nest” in that area, to acquire his decoys.
Original paint with light wear.
Provenance: Robert Shisler Collection, acquired directly from the maker
