Item Details
Description
"The Forbidden City" by Roderick MacFarquhar and the editors of the Newsweek Book Division, Wonders of Man Series published by Newsweek Books, 1972; 1st edition.

"Nearly 150 illustrations - a third in full color - supplement and enhance this detailed history of imperial Peking and its fabled palace complex. Delicately tinted scrolls, vibrantly colored pottery, handsome manuscript illuminations, numerous modern photographs, and a number of specially commissioned diagrams, maps, and charts complement the text."Original dust jacket [some surface and edge wear, c.2.1/2" long repaired crease between front side and spine of dj: see photos]; hard boards, original black cloth with gold decoration on front boards and golden lettering on spine; large format: 9" x 11.3/4"; color illustrated endpapers, 172 pages including Index on glossy heavy paper, fully illustrated, very good condition.

"The book claims it is authored by Roderick MacFarquhar, one of the most important scholars on China, and by "the Editors of the Newsweek Book Division." Essentially, a great scholar writes a book, it is dumbed down by the editors of Newsweek to make sure that it does not frighten away the general public. And the book contains at times interesting information. I am a China scholar, but I still learned quite a bit (this was the MacFarquhar part). But much of book is general history of China, stuff that might be interesting if one knows little about China..."[from the private review].

Roderick "Rod" Lemonde MacFarquhar was a British politician, journalist, and academic orientalist, specializing in China as a Harvard University professor.
