James R. Carley, American (1909-2006). North Dakota School ovoid form vase with matte glaze featuring a central band of brown stenciled images of ancient Etruscan hoplites carrying spears and shields on mustard yellow ground with fishscale pattern shoulder decoration. There is a circular blue stamp 'UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA / GRAND FORKS, N.D. / M. CABLE/ MADE AT / School of Mines / N.D. CLAY' and incised 'JRC'. Provenance: From the estate of James Rey Carley, Asheville, NC. Catalogue Note: This vase was one of the first pieces created by James Carley. He based the design on images observed in Etruscan art. He recounted later that the most difficult factor in creating the pattern was the geometry. Measures 8"H x 6.25"W.
