Description
Canadian. Brantford, Ontario. Salt-glazed stoneware. Two salt-glazed jugs with floral motifs from the Brantford Pottery. The first is a 2-gallon jug stamped, "F.P. Goold & Co Brantford C.W." Franklin Goold; the second is similarly stamped without "C.W.". Franklin Goold and Charles Waterous owned the Brantford Pottery together from 1859 to 1867. As neither one had much experience in making pottery, they employed several skilled potters to manufacture their wares. Stamped, "F.P. Goold & Co. Brantford, C.W." 2" and "F.P. Goold Brantford" 2". Lot 1: 14.5" x 8.5". Lot 2: 14.5" x 8". From the June and late David Chambers Collection.
Condition
The jug marked "F.P. Goold & Co." has a chip on the front edge of the lip as well as a hairline crack starting at the lip to the right of the handle and extending downwards for approximately 5". The other jug exhibits potstones on either side of the decoration and the underside of the handle. A couple of chips can be seen on the front of the jug towards the base. Moderate staining beneath the glaze is evident over much of the jug.
