Title: Punch pretending to be R.W. Catching up on the News While Having a Glass of Van or Done Air...(Even Tho There was Another Orange Alert...)
Place Published: San Francisco
Publisher:
Date Published: 2003
Description: Painted paper and found material assemblage with drawings by William T. Wiley. 55.5x29x14 cm (22x11½x5½").Signed and dated by William T. Wiley. Provenance: from the collection of Robin and Marsha Garces Williams. In 2003, on the occasion of a fundraiser for fine press publisher Arion Press and the Grabhorn Institute, William T. Wiley created this sculpture for hosts Robin and Marsha Garces Williams. The Williams family were dedicated patrons of fine press printing, here opening their home to the artists, crafts-people and subscribers of San Francisco's premiere artists' book publisher. William T. Wiley, one of the most prolific artistic collaborators with Andrew Hoyem, created this charming tribute to San Francisco's adopted son, comedian Robin Williams. Created in the wake of September 11, 2001's terrorist attacks, the orange alert refers to the imminent threat level as published by the United States government under the aegis of the newly instituted Department of Homeland Security. Wiley's depiction of Williams as the archetypal clown Punch raises Williams into comedy's pantheon of heroes – to an honored spot right next to Charlie Chaplin's little tramp. Wiley's protest against the barbarism of "modern times" sounded a powerful evocation of San Francisco's spirit at a time when the city was losing its rebellious sense of humor. Accompanying the sculpture are 5 volumes of The Punch Library of Humour from the Williams' collection.Additional shipping charges may apply
