Description
Western Europe, France, ca. 1686 CE. A choice bronze medal commemorating the Duke of Berry’s birth, grandson of Louis XIV, professionally slabbed by NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation). Obverse: Portrait bust of King Louis XIV and inscription "LUDOVICUS MAGNUS REX CHRISTIANISSIMUS." King Louis XIV (1638-1715) founded the Academie Royale des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres in 1663 to produce commemorative medals that celebrated significant events during his reign, from 1643 to 1715. Each medal in this series featured a profile portrait of the king on the obverse and a symbolic image and inscription on the reverse. Jean Mauger, who worked at the Paris mint from 1685 until his death in 1722, was responsible for this medal's design. These medallions were given as gifts to those deserving of royal favor. Size: 1.55" Diameter (3.9 cm)

Provenance: private Boynton Beach, Florida, USA collection; ex-J. Lipson collection, Ottawa, Canada
