Description
East Asia, South Korea, Goryeo (or Koryo) period, ca. 918 to 1392 CE. A delightful porcelain sprinkler vessel in the form of a duck with an open beak forming the fill hole, enveloped in lustrous, celadon-hued glaze. The bird sits with folded wings, each feather of its plumage carefully hand-carved as it gracefully curves its long neck upward. A tuft of feathers on the animal's back reveals a series of piercings allowing one to sprinkle out the cotenants of the vessel. One of the notable artistic accomplishments of the Goryeo period was the production of sculptural celadon ceramics, like this example. In its carefully rendered details and beautifully translucent color, this vessel is both a technical tour de force and a playfully charming object for admiration and delight. Size: 11.8" L x 6.9" W x 8.9" H (30 cm x 17.5 cm x 22.6 cm)
