Description
Franz Bergman (Austrian, 1861-1936), Cold-Painted Bronze Figure of an Arab Scribe
Vienna, late 19th century, nicely cast scene depicting Arab scribe seated and writing upon a Persian rug, nearby a bound manuscript on stand, figure verso numbered and signed with the Bergman amphora mark, rug underside with additional worn marks.
3 1/2 x 5 3/4 x 4 1/4 in.
Franz Bergman was an Austrian entrepreneur best known for his Viennese foundry which produced many patina- and cold-painted bronze sculptures of erotic figures, animals, Orientalist scenes, and mythological creatures. Bergman is often misidentified as a sculptor, but he himself was not the original artist for the works—rather, he hired many anonymous sculptors to execute his ideas. Born in 1861 in Vienna, Austria, he initially inherited a bronze factory from his father and later opened his own foundry.
Collection of a Lady, Youngsville, North Carolina
