LAX, William (1761-1836). A Method of Finding the Latitude of a Place, by means of Two Altitudes of the Sun and the Time Elapsed. [London?]: [s.n.], [1799].

4to (279 x 222 mm). Folding table. (Spotting to title-page). Half contemporary diced calf, marbled sides, gilt-lettering and tooling to spine (ends a bit worn, corners rubbed). Provenance: Sir Robert Johnson Eden, 5th Baronet (1774-1844), armorial bookplate.

FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED TO EDEN FROM THE AUTHOR. Lax, a Fellow of the Royal Society and fellow of Trinity College, was an English astronomer and mathematician who is credited with the form and contents of the Nautical Almanac - an important reference for navigation in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
