A rare and unusual pair of Danish mid-century lounge chairs designed by Aage Egeriis for France & Son, c. 1960's. Made of fiberglass-reinforced polyester, these sturdy chairs are commonly referred to as "garden" chairs for their versatile ability to safely and seamlessly transition from the exterior patio to interior living space. One of the most famous examples of Egeriis's work, these chairs follow his tightly held philosophy that furniture should be a sculpture in and of itself, but should be designed around a basis of anatomical measurements. This ideology lends itself to Egeriis's organic, abstracted designs that maintain regular, natural-based proportions. In Egeriis's own works, "by observing nature’s open basic shapes in leaves, flowers, mussel and snail shells, etc., you will see that these shapes follow very definite laws of pressure and tension, so that a hollow in one place automatically finds equilibrium by creating a hollow in another place." This chair model was exhibited at the 1968 Copenhagen Furniture Fair, cementing its place in the Scandinavian mid-century canon of iconic, timeless works.
