Breton, Andre and Marcel Duchamp (editors), Le Surrealisme en 1947, number 439 of 950 copies of the deluxe edition, with 20 of the 25 original prints bound in, this copy lacking the color lithographs by Joan Miro, Victor Brauner, Max Ernst and Jacques Herold, as well as the Yves Tanguy etching, softcover, original wraps with printed acetate jacket, housed in the original slipcase, published by Pierre a Feu and Maeght, Paris, printed by Mourlot, the highlights from the 20 original prints present include lithographs by Alexander Calder, Man Ray, Yes Tanguy and Wilfredo Lam, two woodcuts by Jean Arp, etchings by Dorothea Tanning and Hans Bellmer. NB: The colophon calls for 24 original prints, but doesn't include the one by Man Ray, thus, complete copies have 25. This exhibition was the first post-WW2 survey of Surrealism, put on by Breton and Duchamp to celebrate their collaborators who were thriving before the war started. Provenance: from the estate of Leon and Jane Arkus. Leon was the Director of the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, from 1969 to 1980.
