Description
Two (2) Cherokee baskets, consisting of: one (1) basket of white oak and walnut by Cherokee artist Agnes Lossie Welch (1925-1997), having a squared base with circular rim, dark and medium brown dyed plaits, signed "1986 Agnes Welch" on the underside. 9 1/2" H x 10 1/2" D at top. One (1) tall basket of white oak, having a squared base with circular rim, in natural color with brown and orange dyed plaits, hanging tag of "Keener Craft Shop" identifies the maker as Minnie Smith. 13" H x 10" D at top. Note: Keener Craft Shop was named for Rev. Horace Ulrich Keener, 1st resident missionary to the Cherokee Indians. The 1847 cabin that was his home served as a store in the mid 20th C. to sell crafts made by local Native American craftspeople.
Condition
Both baskets in excellent condition, taller basket (Minnie Smith) with slight lean.
