Description
A PAIR GEORGE III BRONZE CONVERTED SIGNAL CANNONS, BY DUTTAL, MINORIES, LONDON, CIRCA 1780, each cast in bronze and stamped with, "DUTTALL," above an oval crowned "G" stamp and an oval crowned, "V" stamp over "Minories," mounted on a naval style stepped oak carriage with bronze, cast, and wrought iron ribbon spring striking mechanism, lower step has rosewood plaque inscribed, "MAKER DUTTALL, MINORIES LONDON CIRCA 1780. / CONVERTED TO PERCUSSION SIGNAL CANNON BY / THE COMMM ANDER OF LANGUARD, FORT SUFFOLK, 1850;" cannon length: 9 1/4", with carriage: 18". Note: The additional Crowned V stamp on top of the cannon was probably added when it was converted in 1850 during the reign of Queen Victoria to a percussion signal cannon.Provenance: Collection of Hubert Hudson, Texas Senator 1957-1963, Brownsville, Texas.
Condition
The cannons have expected small scratches, dings, marks, and uneven patination due to age and use. The carriages are lacking wheels, are missing some bolts for the bronze holding straps, and the cast/wrought iron striking mechanism has some surface rust and pitting. The oak carriage has wax drippings, small marks, scratches, age shrinkage cracks, and uneven patina due to age and use.
